1921 GWYNNE ALBERT G2 11.9hp 'ALL WEATHER TOURER'

'Rare and interesting' are the main criteria for the cars we stock and they do not come much rarer than this.
Only six Alberts are known to exist of which only two are thought to be complete and operational. This car is reported to be one of the two complete and running vehicles and the only G2 remaining intact.
The Albert Car Co of Vauxhall, London was founded in 1920 by Adam Grimaldi one of the designers involved with Argyll Cars. Alberts were soon acquired by the Gwynne Engineering Co and the slightly better known Gwynne-Alberts were produced at the former Thornycroft factory in Chiswick until 1924.
The quality of this early vintage tourer is remarkable with full four seater open coachwork in aluminium, fully collapsable hood, twin side mounted spare wheels, powerful 11.9 hp four cylinder overhead valve motor and four speed transmission. The radiatior grille is very similar to that trademark feature of a somewhat better known luxury car manufacturer of the era hence the Albert's nickname of 'baby Silver Ghost'. Boasting a 'v' design opening windscreen and also electric starter motor, the Albert All Weather Tourer was very advanced for its day and cost a whopping £640.
First registered in Edinburgh, this car remained in Scotland until 1981 and has had just two owners since. It remains extremely original, seemingly never having had or needed a full restoration. It still has its tax disc dating from March 1929 on the windscreen! The dark blue paint is old but presentable whilst the interior was fully re-trimmed in blue leather with matching carpets in 1997 and remains immaculate. Original CAV nickel lamps and brass fittings remain in place and in excellent order.
Mechanically, the engine is smooth and quiet and on the road the car drives well with cruising speeds of 45 to 50 mph probably attainable. Last Mot'd in 1998, mild recommisioning has been carried out and the car now has a current Mot to May 2009.
It comes with a good history file which includes the very rare but important original owners hand book and servicing instructions which are amazingly detailed and include pull-out diagrams for all components.
This is both an extremely rare, desirable and very useable open vintage car but also represents an important part of early British motor manufacturing heritage from a company which produced its last car 84 years ago!
